Mike Heinen fired an eight-under-par 63 at the TPC at Deere Run for a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the John Deere Classic. Heinen collecting nine birdies and a bogey as he seeks his first win since claiming his lone PGA victory at the 1994 Houston Open.
Heinen leads Fred Funk by one shot and holds a two-shot advantage over defending champion David Gossett, Robert Gomez and Tripp Isenhour. Three shots back are a cluster of players: David Berganio, Jr., Duffy Waldorf, Gene Sauers, Pete Jordan, Michael Long, Mark Carnevale, Spike McRoy, Jerry Smith and Jeff Gove.
