Shaun Micheel put himself in pole position for his first career PGA Tour victory with a third-round 67 for a three-shot lead in the BC Open at En-Joie Golf Club, New York. The 33-year-old had played only 15 holes of his second round when darkness caused play to be suspended on Friday. When he returned to play his last three holes on Saturday morning he birdied the 16th and aced the 162-yard 17th using a seven-iron.
Micheel, hunting his first U.S. PGA Tour title, followed up by firing a five-under-par 7 in the third round to finish 19-under on 197, three strokes ahead of Australia's Paul Gow (67). Tour rookie Matt Peterson shot a 66 to move into a tie for third place with Tripp Isenhour, Glen Day and 1996 champion Fred Funk on 203.
