Jerry Kelly produced a marvellous seven-under-par round of 65 to snatch the the Advil Western Open in Illinois yesterday. Kelly started the day three shots off the pace but overturned that disadvantage to capture his second tournament of the year. The 35-year-old began the day in join third spot but ended it on top of the leaderboard, two shots ahead of Davis Love III thanks to eight birdies and only one bogey in his final round.
Afterwards, his delight was obvious. "I wanted to be me out there. I didn't try and do anything special and I knew what I had to do with my game. I had always talked about the Milwaukee Open and the Western being the biggest non-major tournaments that there are. There's no question about it. It doesn't get any better," he said.
Love III produced an equally-impressive round of 66 to take second spot, two shots ahead of Brandt Jobe, who also carded a 66. John Cook finished fourth, one stroke ahead of Australian rookie Peter Lonard, Stuart Appleby, Duffy Waldorf, Chris Riley and Neal Lancaster. Overnight leader Robert Allenby had a disastrous 75 to finish joint-10th.
