Kevin Sutherland beat fellow American Scott McCarron to take the Accenture WGC Match Play golf title and $1m in prize money. Sutherland, ranked 62nd, took the lead for the first time on the 33rd hole and held out to claim his first career victory. Sutherland trailed for much of the day but can thank his putting for keeping him in contention as McCarron tried to pull away. Twice he took a two-hole lead but Sutherland stayed in touch and overtook his long time friend with three holes remaining.
Then on the 36th Sutherland landed in the bunker and appeared to have given McCarron a chance to redeem himself but he recovered well chipping to within 18 inches and putting for victory. In the play-off for third place Brad Faxon defeated Paul Azinger at the first extra hole.
