McGinley beaten as top seeds fall

Paul McGinley is out of the World Match Play Championship at La Costa in California while only two of the top 10 seeds have survived the second round. McGinley was beaten 2 and 1 by Kevin Sutherland after trailing for most of the contest. Sergio Garcia and David Toms are the only top seeds remaining after they registered wins over Charles Howell III and Rocco Mediate respectively.

The second round was littered with seeded casualties as Ernie Els lost 1-up after a playoff against Tom Lehman, Retief Goosen lost 1-up to Jose Maria Olazabal and Davis Love III fell to Paul Azinger 1-up. Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh were also casualties of the seed cull after being beaten by Peter O'Malley and Niclas Fasth respectively. Phil Mickelson and David Duval were also defeated.
