Duffy Waldorf carded a second straight six-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Arizona. Darkness halted play with 25 golfers still on the course – including 17-year-old Ty Tryon, who followed his opening-round 77 by shooting even-par through 15 holes.
But at six over and just three holes to go, Tryon would need a miracle to avoid missing the cut in his first event as a PGA Tour member. While Tryon has drawn most of the attention, Waldorf has strung together two straight dominant rounds. After just one bogey on the opening day, the 39-year-old carded seven birdies and an eagle.
Vijay Singh of Fiji and Rory Sabbatini are tied for second place on 11 under par at 131, with Skip Kendall and Chris DiMarco two shots off the lead. World number two Phil Mickelson, coming off his 20th career win last week, is tied for 37th on four under at 138.
