St Andrews has been confirmed as the venue for the 2005 British Open Championship. The famous Scottish course was the scene of Tiger Woods' record-breaking feat two years ago when he became the first player in major history to finish 19 under par, and with his eight-stroke winning margin matched the biggest victory in the event since 1870. It also made him only the fifth man - and at 24 the youngest - to achieve a career Grand Slam, following Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.
The first Open over the Old Course, alternatively known as the Home of Golf, was in 1873, with prize money amounting to £25. This July's event is at Muirfield, and next year's championship at Sandwich.
