Australian PGA Championship winner Robert Allenby has said he knew his putt for par on the final hole would go in to give him a one-stroke victory over fellow Australian Geoff Ogilvy. Allenby, the world number 26, had held a one-stroke lead after each round of the A$1million tournament.
The 30-year-old holed a seven-foot putt for par on the par-four 18th hole on Sunday to finish on 15-under par 273 after Ogilvy had sent a hard-hit birdie attempt from 35 feet into the back of the cup to complete his four-round total of 14-under par 274.
Defending champion Allenby said after watching 24-year-old Ogilvy's heroics, suddenly his putt to clinch the tournament felt like it was from 20 feet, not seven.
"I knew it was going in. It was downwind so I didn't have to hit it too hard, thank goodness," Allenby said. "It was just one of those things. If you are going to win tournaments, that's the way to do it. On the front nine I didn't putt too good today which was pretty much the story of the last couple of days."
