Ian Woosnam became the oldest-ever winner of the Cisco World Match Play championship at Wentworth with victory over Ireland's Pádraig Harrington today. Trailing Harrington by two after a morning of inspired play from both men, Woosnam edged his way back into contention and eventually levelled the match after 11 of the final 18 holes.
By now, it seemed Harrington's challenge was fizzling out as Woosnam took the next two holes to lead by two. The remaining holes were halved which meant Woosnam was crowned champion, netting the £250,000 first prize in the process.
The victory was the Welshman's first victory for more than four and a half years, and Woosnam now becomes the first player to win the World Match Play in three different decades. Ironically, he was only a late entry for the event after the withdrawal of several US players. The defeat for Harrington means it was his seventh runners-up finish of the season.
"It's been a long time since I won and to come out and beat four great players this week, I'm really proud of myself. I've played some terrific golf today, so did Pádraig, and it's a pity somebody had to lose," said Woosnam.
