Former champions Nick Faldo and Ian Woosnam, as well as emerging Australian talent Adam Scott, have joined the field for next week's World Matchplay Championship at Wentworth, organisers said today. One place remains to be filled in the 12-man line-up and this will be announced later in the week, an International Management Group spokesperson said in a statement.
The player's name, however, is an open secret with American John Daly, the 1995 British Open champion, a virtual certainty for the event. Daly, always a popular drawcard in any tournament, is playing in this week's European Tour stop, the German Masters in Cologne.
England's Lee Westwood will be defending his matchplay title at Wentworth, and he will be challenged by last year's runner-up Colin Montgomerie, U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen, Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn of Denmark and Ireland's Padraig Harrington.
Former champion Vijay Singh of Fiji has also confirmed his entry, along with Canadian left-hander Mike Weir. The $1 million event takes place from October 11-14.
