Wentworth organisers face invite dilemma

The organisers of this year's Cisco World Match Play championship at Wentworth face a serious dilemma as they continue their quest to fill the final three places in the 12-man field. Five members of the European side who would have been playing in the Ryder Cup next week - defending champion Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie, Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington and Thomas Bjorn - will contest the event, which takes place from October 11 to 14. However, no Americans have so far said they will take part.

The other players already committed to the £1million event so far are US Open champion and South African Retief Goosen, Fiji's Vijay Singh, Australian Robert Allenby and Canadian Mike Weir.

"The postponement of the Ryder Cup and the understandable uncertainty over whether some players are willing to travel means we cannot confirm the names of all 12 players at this stage," said International Management Group chairman Mark McCormack in a statement. He added that they hoped to be in a position to name the other three players next week.
