Scotland's Colin Montgomerie fears that the Ryder Cup could lose its competitive edge because of outrage over events at Brookline in 1999. Although the seven-times Order of Merit winner was forced to endure relentless abuse from American supporters at Brookline, he maintains the event would not be the same without its fierce rivalry and patriotic pride.
"The Ryder Cup just would not work without its competitiveness and fire. There will be incidents at The Belfry," Monty told the Mirror. "There are always incidents in matchplay and certain things creep up to make the rivalry even more intense - which is good. This is what it needs. Let's be competitive, but at the same time respect the etiquette of the game," he added.
