Golf: Woods leads through bad weather

After a build-up bathed in brilliant sunshine, the 100th US Open experienced another fog delay at Pebble Beach today. Half the field had still to finish their first rounds when play was suspended in mid-afternoon yesterday and, far from conditions improving, they were even worse first thing this morning.

The 75 players yet to complete returned to the Californian coastal course to prepare for a 6.45am (local time) resumption, but with visibility only around 100 yards in places a further one-hour delay was announced.

Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke were among those kept waiting. Montgomerie was level par after seven holes and Clarke two over after nine, but Faldo stood four under with five to play and was joint third, only two strokes behind leader Tiger Woods.

The world number one completed a six-under-par 66 just before the hold-up and had the luxury therefore of a long lie-in this morning while the championship attempted to make up for lost time.
