Golf: Harrington in fine form

Dubliner Padraig Harrington topped the leaderboard at the half-way stage of the Benson & Hedges International at the Belfry with a three-under-par second round of 69.

The Irishman made light of the awkward slopes of the Sutton Coldfield course in the £1million tournament. Harrington has the lead after the first round leader, Phillip Price, bogeyed the final two holes. Just behind him, Shropshire player Jonathon Lomas continued his fine form to finish two shots off the lead. European number one Montgomerie had a good day, matching Harrington’s 69 to finish at one-over-par, one ahead of Jose Maria Olazabal. But European legend Seve Ballesteros had another disastrous day, finishing up at 25 over par.
