Connolly resigns as Galway coach

Galway hurling has been rocked by the resignation of selector and coach John Connolly on Friday night. Although the timing of the decision has come as a surprise to many within the county, there had been a sense of inevitability about the move since the Castlegar man informed Galway manager Noel Lane last Christmas that he may be forced to resign during the course of the season because of his ever-increasing business commitments.

With that in mind, Noel Lane set about increasing his management team from three to five to accommodate Connolly's eventual departure, with Niall McInerney and Pat Kearney both added to the management team.

A county spokesman confirmed this afternoon: "The resignation merely serves to highlight the demands on time, and the commitment required, by both players and management alike, when nothing less than 100 percent commitment is required."

The Galway senior hurling panel were informed of Connolly's resignation at training in Ballinasloe last night ahead of their National League Division 1A clash with Meath in Athenry tomorrow afternoon.
