Leitrim managed to just about ensure a late victory over Wexford at Carrick-on-Shannon at the end of what was an evenly matched encounter thanks to sub Conor Cullen, who fired to the visitors' net shortly before the final whistle.

Wexford started off brightly and Niall Hughes put them ahead when he fired over a first minute point. They Slaneysiders continued to put the home side under pressure and Leitrim had a let off when Wexford failed to convert a clear cut goal chance two minutes later.

A Mark Rossiter free tap over eight minutes into the action saw Wexford enjoy a 0-02 to 0-00 advantage.

Leitrim began to settle down and halted the early surge by the visitors when Darragh Rooney shot over shortly afterwards and opened the home side's account.

A Keith Beirne point on 14 minutes got the home side on level terms. Leitrim took the lead for the first time in the game some eight minutes later when Davis Bruen fired over a well-hit long range point. The home sides advantaged was further stretched when Darragh Rooney hammered home a goal shortly afterwards.

Wexford who hadn't scored for 22 minutes kept themselves in the hunt with a Tom Byrne points Before the interval Leitrim's Beirne from a free and Wexford's Donal Shanley from play traded points at opposite ends to leave the home side leading by 1-04 to 0-04 at half-time.

After the restart, Wexford narrowed the gap when Robbie Brooks shot over shortly after the the throw-in. But Leitrim, over the next four minutes, increased their advantage with points from Mark Plunkett and Ryan O'Rourke.

However, Wexford upped their game and got on level terms by the 43rd minute after Martin O'Connor drove the through the Leitrim rearguard to fire home a goal and Donal Shanley chipped in with a point.

Wexford went two ahead in the space of two more minutes with Shanley and Tom Byrne adding a point apiece.

But Leitrim regained the lead when Ryan O'Rourke blasted home a goal on the 48 minute mark. A minute later Wexford levelled again when Tom Byrne split the Leitrim posts.

It was even enough for the next 13 minutes until Ryan O'Rourke edged Leitrim ahead with a point with sub Jack Heslin soon afterwards adding another for the home side.

Mark Rossiter hit back with a Wexford point but Cullen's late goal ensured victory for Leitrim at the death.
