The GAA and Department of Foreign Affairs have announced €900,000 in funding for 110 clubs throughout the world.

The grant-aid comes under the GAA's Global Games Development Fund, operated since 2007.

From supporting just 14 projects in 2013, the Global Games Development Programme has grown and developed to now support around 100 different projects annually in over 30 countries in every region of the world.

The money will help GAA clubs across the globe pay for equipment, pitches, insurance, and other costs.

"It’s a very significant announcement," Colm Brophy, the Minister for Overseas Development Aid and Diaspora, told RTÉ Sport.

"It’s €900,000 of funding for the development of the GAA right around the world and it’s a major step.

"It’s very important that we are ploughing that funding into grass roots level for development and not just in traditional countries where the diaspora is strong - but right around the world."

This year will see 110 international clubs in receipt of funding.

The money will be spent on buying equipment for clubs, on insurance costs, pitch expenses and other overheads.

"We take for granted a little bit how available facilities and playing equipment are here in Ireland," says GAA Director-General Tom Ryan.

"But that is not always the case overseas.

"This find will help our clubs worldwide to provide equipment and basic essentials that go with staging games.

"It will help give Irish people abroad and our international friends a platform to play Gaelic Games."
