James 'Jas' Murphy, who captained Kerry in their 1953 All-Ireland football final victory over Armagh, has died aged 98.

The Tralee native helped the Kingdom past the Orchard County on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-06 in front of a then record attendance for an All-Ireland of just over 86,000 people.

He also won two Munster SFC medals in 1950 and 1953. He started his inter-county career with Cork, playing two years with the Rebels in 1947 and 1948.

He started his club career with Kerins O'Rahilly's, before his career with An Garda Síochána took him to Cork where he played with Blackpool's St. Nick's when they lost the 1947 county final.

The following year he was transferred to Cobh where he joined the Garda team and they won a Cork county title in 1950.
