Cork great Ger Cunningham has departed his role as a coach/selector in Kieran Kingston's managerial set-up, it has been confirmed.

Cunningham, a former Dublin manager and three-time All-Ireland winning goalkeeper, has been part of Kingston's backroom team for the past two years but has opted out for 2022.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner, the St Finbarr's man cited "family and work commitments", saying he would not be able to commit to a third year.

"I sincerely wish him (Kingston), his management team and the wonderful panel of talented and dedicated players every future success," he told the paper.

This brings an end to Cunningham's third stint in the Cork coaching set-up, having been part of the management team from 2003 to 2006, when the Rebels won back-to-back All-Ireland titles, and again from 2011 to 2013.

A highly successful goalkeeper, Cunningham was Cork's No 1 from 1981 until 1998, winning All-Ireland titles in 1984, 1986 and 1990, collecting four All-Stars and the Texaco Hurler of the Year award in '86.

Cunningham is the second member of the Cork management team to step away this week. Goalkeeping coach Christy O'Connor has also departed, with Kingston paying tribute to his "huge commitment" in a statement.
