'Klopp is a massive hurling fan' - John Meyler

John Meyler: "He was incredible but he wanted to talk about hurling."

This Wednesday, David Meyler will be at Anfield to watch Liverpool take on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

It won't be the first time the former Republic of Ireland, Sunderland and Hull midfielder has gone to watch the Reds playing in Europe since he retired, with the Cork man among those to witness the team he grew up supporting going on to win the 2019 final in Madrid first-hand as his close friend and ex-Black Cats team-mate Jordan Henderson lifted the trophy.

As detailed in new book Meyler: A Family Memoir, which follows his own career as well as his father's - former Cork senior hurling manager John - it's clear that wherever the son goes, the father oft follows and vice versa.

That's how John Meyler got to spend some time in Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's company in the not too distant past as he recalled when he and David joined RTÉ Radio 1's Saturday Sport this week.

"David goes to the James Milner Foundation dinner every year and he bought me there, a couple of years ago, two tickets to the Masters," he told Des Cahill.

"But then he bought me (a prize to be) assistant manager to Klopp in Celtic Park for the Liverpool Legends against the Celtic Legends.

"That was on a Sunday but on the Saturday night, Klopp had been at a testimonial in Germany in Borussia Dortmund and he was tired and he said to me, 'John, you can take over (the Legends team), you can manage Liverpool for the day and I will help you'.

"He was incredible but he wanted to talk about hurling. I wanted to talk about football. It was brilliant."

John Meyler added that the German has a grá for the code.

"He's a massive fan of hurling, the speed of hurling and all of that but I said to him, 'There's one difference between you and me as a manager... I've to make do with the 35 Cork hurlers I have on the panel. You've only one Liverpool player on your panel, Trent Alexander-Arnold, who's from Liverpool.'

"I said, 'If you want a centre-forward, you can spend €50m and buy somebody, I can't do that.'

"(Klopp) was fascinated by that and the stats and all the psychology side of it and the training."

Meyler, who also managed Wexford, Kerry and Carlow prior to his spell in charge of Cork between 2017 and 2019, also revealed that Manchester United coach Mike Phelan is another fan of the sport.

"His dad was from Kilkenny," he said of Phelan, who has served as a coach under both Alex Ferguson and current incumbent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, either side of times at clubs including Hull City when David Meyler was there.

"And Steve Bruce when I would be standing on the sideline over at Christmas time, they'd come over and talk to you about 'how the hurling is going' in the training ground in Hull.

"They were great, they were really interested in hurling and Klopp knew about it alright."
