The GAA has announced that Martin Storey will represent the Wexford hurlers of 1996 in place of the jubilee presentation at tomorrow's All-Ireland hurling final.
The winning team from 25 years previous is usually presented to the crowd before the game, but a statement from the GAA said that "ongoing covid restrictions mean that the Wexford hurlers of 1996 will not be honoured in the traditional fashion tomorrow".
Instead, Storey, the captain for the Model County's only All-Ireland triumph in the last 53 years will bring the Liam MacCarthy Cup to the plinth before Limerick take on Cork in front of 40,000 fans.
Ex-Clare skipper Anthony Daly performed a similar role last year and the GAA said it planned to honour the hurling and football winners (Dublin and Meath) of '95 and '96 at a later date.
Wexford went into that 1996 final as outsiders against a Limerick side that had won a brilliant Munster championship when defeating Cork, Clare and Tipperary, after a replay, but Wexford defied the odds despite playing the second half with just 14 men.
Liam Griffin's side won by 1-13 to 0-14, with the goal coming from Tom Dempsey in the first half.
