Kieran McGeeney is to remain on as Armagh senior football manager for the 2022 season after the county board agreed to extend his tenure on Tuesday evening.

It will be an eighth season at the helm for McGeeney, who also spent a year working alongside Paul Grimley when he was Orchard boss.

The news comes just weeks after Armagh were edged out by Monaghan in a classic Ulster semi-final. This, after a league campaign where McGeeney's side preserved their top-flight status when beating Roscommon in a winner-takes-all clash.

Armagh's championship record under their 2002 All-Ireland winning captain is not one to write home about, in spite of the number of exciting young players introduced in recent seasons. It's 2007 since the county last contested an Ulster final.

Another year in Division 1 and the prospect of more games against top opposition should stand to Armagh as they look to end that wait for an Anglo Celt Cup.

McGeeney previously managed Kildare from 2007 to 2013, guiding them to an All-Ireland semi-final in 2010.
