Leitrim lost one of its greatest ever footballers this month.

Packie McGarty was born in Mohill in 1933. He had a thoroughly distinguished 23-year career with Leitrim, making his debut when he was just 16, and winning Railway Cup honours with Connacht.

McGarty played in six Connacht finals, losing five of them to Galway and one to Mayo in a career that lasted from 1949 to 1971.

John Lynch paid tribute to his achievements and enduring legacy.
