Tipperary U20 1-19 Clare U20 0-12

All-Ireland champions Tipperary powered their way past an understrength Clare in the second half of the Munster Under-20 Hurling Championship quarter-final at rain-soaked Semple Stadium, Thurles.

Firm favourites Tipp took some time to exert their authority.

Clare were the sharper side in the first half, particularly in the second quarter.

The sides were level 0-05 each at the water break but then the visitors, with Cian Galvin and Mark Rodgers leading the way, hit four points without reply from Rodgers (2), Galvin and Robin Mounsey to lead 0-10 to 0-06 at half-time.

The champions looked in trouble but were transformed in the second half.

Conor Bowe was the star of the show hitting five of Tipp's six points as they moved ahead 0-11 to 0-10 by the 38th minute.

At the second water break, the hosts were 0-13 to 0-10 clear, a seven-point turnaround as Clare failed to score in that period.

In the last quarter Tipp added four points before the Banner men had their first score of the second half, a Galvin point from a free in the 56th minute.

A further point from Rodgers hinted at a Clare revival but this was scuppered when the Premier men were awarded a penalty after Andrew Ormond was fouled and Devon Ryan netted in the 59th minute.

Tipp now face Waterford in the Munster semi-final.

Their second half showing was impressive with Bowe an inspiring figure shooting a total of seven points from play.

Ormond, who limped out of the game at the finish, Kevin McCarthy, Eoghan Connolly, and Ray McCormack were others to catch the eye.

Clare’s second-half collapse was surprising as they had looked capable of springing a surprise beforehand.

Galvin, Rodgers, Paddy Donnellan, and Darragh Lohan were their top performers.
