The Gaelic Players Association has called for inter-county training sessions before 14 September to be covered by injury insurance schemes, a defined closed season and all Championships to be completed before 2020, but 17% of members may not play again in 2020.

In a document circulated to GPA members over the weekend - after a meeting with the GAA's Central Competitions Control Committee on Friday - CEO Paul Flynn brought members up to speed with the looming return to play at club and inter-county level.

Flynn revealed that his organisation was broadly in favour of an open draw rather than the existing provincial format and desire a defined closed season between 2020 and 2021 competitions.

However, there were also significant health and safety concerns expressed, with 17% of players indicating they may choose not to play again at all this year as the country copes with the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic and fears of a 'second wave' remain.

"While there is now government guidance around a safe return to team sports, we are aware that for some of you, your health and safety and that of your family and close friends remains a concern," Flynn wrote.

"While the majority of players feel it is safe to return, 17% of players have indicated they may not do so.

"We will work to resolve the issues which you have raised; however, while Covid-19 remains in the country, there will remain some risk. We will respect the decision of any players who opt out of playing in 2020.

"Equally, we would call for understanding from county boards, managers, and supporters on this matter."

Flynn's memo said that 76% of GPA members believe Competitions must be completed within the calendar year.

There were also calls for a defined off-season to be set out before the 2021 season begins, with 72% of players viewing this as very important.

The GPA document also revealed that 75% of players believe the start of the 2021 season should be delayed to ensure this is accommodated.

The players’ group also wants any inter-county training session organised before 14 September to be covered by the GAA Injury Benefit Scheme, which is not currently the case, and a minimum four-week window between the completion of club championships and a county's first inter-county game.
