He has since gone on to win 11 All-Ireland titles as Kilkenny manager - and perhaps a few more could still arrive in the future - but the first time Brian Cody led the Cats in the final, he was foiled by a youthful Cork side.
The Rebels triumphed over highly-fancied Kilkenny in the last All-Ireland Hurling final of the Millennium with a plethora of future household names.
Captain on that day in 1999 for Cork was Mark Landers and as custom dictates, his words had to echo around Croke Park in the aftermath.
This week in our series of 'Great GAA Speeches', Landers joined Joanne Cantwell on Sunday Sport on RTÉ Radio One to recall that great day for Cork in Croke Park.
"It's the first time I've listened to it in about 20 years," he said.
"It's hard to believe it's 21 years ago now at this stage but it was a magnificent day, great to be a Cork person and a fantastic honour as an individual to captain your county to win an All-Ireland."
He added that people tend to remind him about the "welcome back to Leeside, Liam McCarthy" one-liner in his speech above all, while he also went on to talk about how manager Jimmy Barry Murphy played the crucial role in guiding a young team to glory.
