Tipperary emerged as 0-24 to 2-16 winners over Waterford in an Allianz Hurling League Division 1 game where three players were sent off in a nine-minute period in Semple Stadium.

It keeps Tipp's hopes of reaching the next stage of the league alive and inflicts a first defeat on Waterford, despite Peter Hogan and Stephen Bennett finding the net.

Austin Gleeson and Kevin Moran were dismissed in the first period for the visitors, while Cathal Barrett also saw red.

Gleeson was dismissed on the 30-minute mark for two yellow cards and then Moran followed quickly for an off-the-ball incident.

Barrett meanwhile was punished in stoppage time at the end of the 35 minutes for a late and high challenge on Dessie Hutchinson.

Tipp led 0-14 to 1-08 at the break with Hogan’s goal keeping Waterford in touch.

Jason Forde, Seamus Callanan and Niall O’Meara produced fine scores for the home side to keep them ahead.

The second period was tight affair and competitive throughout.

Bennett’s early goal lifted Waterford and while Pauric Mahony was clinical from frees, Callanan, Forde, who top scored with 0-11, and Jake Morris hit superb points to see their side home.
