McConville: Promotion bid still within Roscommon's grasp

It's only two games in and the alarm bells won't be ringing too loudly yet, but Roscommon footballers will nevertheless feel that they will need to get a move on if they are to make an instant return to the league's top tier.

In truth, the Rossies should be heading affairs in Division 2. Laois rescued a draw from the jaws of defeat with two injury-time goals to stun the Rossies in the opening round.

And then on Sunday, Anthony Cunningham's side were again reeled in late on as Fermanagh edged home by the bare minimum at Brewster Park. This, after the Connacht side, had a six-point advantage at the break.

"It's clear that Roscommon have a problem now seeing out games and this is a worrying development for them," said Oisin McConville, when speaking on RTÉ Radio's Sunday Sport.

"Against Fermanagh, you would have expected them to kick six or seven points in the second half to get over the line. They couldn't manage to do that.

"I don't know what the problem is. Maybe it's a second-year syndrome thing.

"Anthony Cunningham has a big stick to beat Roscommon now. They may have to to go through the rest of the league unbeaten, if not winning all their games to get promotion.

"They are in a difficult situation at the moment, but Roscommon still have the quality to get promotion.

"Division 2 is really competitive, to say it isn't is an understatement."
