Down footballer Caolan Mooney has left the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast after an alleged assault that left him with a fractured skull.

Mooney, 26, played in the Mourne men's McKenna Cup win against Fermanagh on Sunday 29 December.

In the early hours of the morning on Monday 30 December, he was involved in an incident outside a hotel in Newry that left his brother Patrick with a broken nose and Moooney himself with head injuries. An ambulance was called to the scene.

A 35-year-old man was later charged in relation to the alleged assault on the inter-county player.

"Finally out of the hospital," Mooney tweeted on Tuesday afternoon. "My skull is fractured but glad to be getting home to let it recover now."

Mooney was a decorated schools player and a Down minor aged just 16, but left Ireland for Australia in 2011 to pursue a career in the AFL with Collingwood.

He returned three years later after making six senior appearances.
