Buckley not inclined to dwell on remarkable medal haul

Rena Buckley isn't inclined to dwell on her famous medal haul as she savoured another national title as Donoughmore triumphed in the All-Ireland junior football final in Ballinasloe on Sunday.

Buckley notched up 0-07 of her side's tally of 1-12 as they edged out Mayo's CL McHale Rovers by a single point after extra-time.

Donoughmore led 1-04 to 0-00 after just 10 minutes but drifted gradually out of the game thereafter with Rachel Kearns rustling up 1-01 in the closing minutes to take the game to extra-time.

It took two frees from Buckley herself in extra-time to help the Cork club over the line.

"That was as tight and tense as any game," she told RTÉ Sport.

"It was a phenomenal match to be part of, you'd have to give 10 out of 10 to McHale Rovers.

"They gave it absolutely everything. It could have gone either way. Definitely in ordinary time, we were lucky to get away with it.

"But I'm absolutely thrilled. Everyone put 100% in today and thanks be to god we got over the line.

"We'd a great start to the game altogether. We had a girl sin-binned. And in fairness, McHale Rovers came into it and tackled very hard. They boxed us out of it in the middle and it looked for a while that they were going to take off. We just snuck over the line and we're thrilled."

It is Buckley's 21st national title in a long and glittering career. She won 11 senior football All-Ireland titles with Cork between 2005 and 2016 along with seven senior camogie titles.

She's also a survivor of Donoughmore's two senior All-Ireland club successes in 2001 and 2003, both won when Buckley was a teenager. However, she is quick to brush away any fixation with her medal tally, insisting that there's always another game to be played.

"Sport goes on and on and there'll be another game tomorrow. It's always about the next game."
