Michael Dempsey has confirmed to RTÉ Sport that he has stepped down as part of Brian Cody's Kilkenny backroom team.

The Laois man, who had a background as a football player and trainer, was part of Cody's Cats set-up since 2005.

But it has emerged that he stepped away in the wake of this year's All-Ireland final hammering by Tipperary.

It is expected that Cody will remain on for a 22nd season in charge and this could be ratified as soon as this month's county board meeting.

Dempsey, who was in charge of physical training, was part of eight Liam MacCarthy Cup wins and leaves big boots to fill.
