The Meath County Board have asked GAA authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to Peter O'Halloran resigning as chairman last week.

O'Halloran stepped down following the emergence of a text message he sent to a referee in 2017, while head of the county's competitions control committee.

The Irish Independent have reported that O'Halloran had told referee Patrick Neilis that he would send him "to ride Slane in a month or so".

Both men insist that the request was never acted upon and O'Halloran said in his resignation statement that it was "a bad call on my behalf that was carried out in the heat of the moment".

However, Meath now feel that an independent review of the incident is needed.

"The Meath GAA management committee have decided tonight that an investigation is necessary into the complaint made against Peter O'Halloran by Patrick Nelis," a statement said.

"It shall now be carried out by a higher GAA authority. We shall make no further comment until this investigation is complete."
