Hurling wrap: Derry get campaign off to a winning start

Derry got their Christy Ring campaign off to a winning start in Portaferry as they recorded a comprehensive win over Down, racking up an impressive score-line of 3-20 to win by nine points.

Their three goals came in the first half from Se McGuigan and two at either side from Cormac O'Doherty and at the break they led 3-09 to 1-05.

The winners played the last 25 minutes with 14-men after Cian Waldron was sent off.

In the Nicky Rackard Cup Armagh defeated Monaghan 2-20 to 2-14. The sides were level at half-time but in the second-half Armagh pushed on to seal the win thanks to goals from Dylan McKenna and Nathan Curry.

Elsewhere, Sligo saw off Louth to earn a 2-24 to 1-19 victory in Dowdallshill. Keith Raymond impressed for the winners, scoring 2-05.
