Cora Staunton and Yvonne Bonner both kicked impressive goals for the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants in their opening game of the new Australian Football League Women's (AFLW) season.

In what is her second season with GWS Giants, Staunton kicked two goals from 14 possessions against the Brisbane Lions, while Donegal star Bonner split the posts in the opening quarter of her AFLW debut game.

After the ball was played in, the four-time All-Ireland winner positioned herself well to gather a pass and steered the ball low between the posts and clinch the six-pointer.

That goal set the game up for a grand stand finish but the Lions managed to hold on for a  4.5 (29) to 4.3 (27) victory. The Brisbane outfit, who have contested the AFLW Grand Final over the last two seasons, rallied from seven points down to claim the opening round win.
