Late Tipperary surge not enough as Meath come out on top in Navan

Promotion hopefuls Meath powered to victory with a strong finish at Pairc Tailteann to get their Allianz League Division 2 campaign off to a strong start.

Level with 13 minutes to go, Andy McEntee's men outscored visiting Tipperary by 0-05 to 0-01 in the closing minutes to claim the two precious points.

Half-time substitute Cillian O'Sullivan was influential for Meath, playing a direct role in four of their points, one of which he scored.

Former captain Graham Reilly also got on the scoresheet after his introduction while Mickey Newman, who sat out 2018 to recover from long-term injury issues, top scored with 0-07.

Tipp finished with 13 men after midfielder Steven O'Brien picked up his second booking in the 66th minute while Josh Keane was black carded and sin-binned in injury-time.

Meath and Liam Kearns' Tipp both finished together on seven points in last year's campaign, a point above relegated Down and Louth.

They saw this as a great opportunity to secure an early win this term though visiting Tipp struggled to find a rhythm.

They were without 2017 All-Star forward Michael Quinlivan as well as 2018 captain Robbie Kiely and Bill Maher.

Meath were closer to full strength and had the luxury of holding talented attackers Reilly and O'Sullivan in reserve.

The hosts pressed up on Tipperary's kick-outs with plenty of success and were also aided initially by a strong breeze.

Newman, who sat out 2018 after missing much of 2018 through injury, put Meath 0-02 to 0-01 ahead with two converted frees.

Shane McEntee, a late addition to the Meath midfield in place of Adam Flanagan, and Thomas O'Reilly were also on the mark as the Royals surged 0-05 to 0-01 clear.

Liam Boland fisted over Tipp's first point from play in the 26th minute but another Newman score left Meath 0-06 to 0-02 clear.

Tipp badly needed something to happen and conjured a goal out of nothing three minutes before the break.

It came from the penalty spot and the boot of Conor Sweeney whose earlier free had rebounded off the post to Dan O'Meara who was fouled.

Newman hit his fifth of the half in injury-time but Meath, who played into the wind after the break, wondered if their 0-07 to 1-02 interval lead was enough.

They outscored Tipp 0-03 to 0-01 in the first 10 minutes of the second-half to indicate that the wind wouldn't be an issue.

Substitute O'Sullivan was influential and had a hand in two of those Meath scores to open up a 0-10 to 1-03 lead.

Yet just as Meath looked set to impose their authority on the game they seemed powerless to prevent another Tipp surge.

This time the Munster outfit, who skipped the pre-season McGrath Cup, reeled off four points in a row with three of those from free-taker Sweeney.

That tied the scores up at 1-07 to 0-10 and left it anyone's game with 15 minutes to go.

But Meath showed quality and hunger when it counted most and picked off five of the game's last six points through Reilly, James McEntee, Newman and O'Sullivan to win it.
