Mickey Graham: Football won't see any benefit from new rules

New Cavan football manager Mickey Graham sees the current experimental rules has not the way forward for a game he feels is evolving in a positive way.

Graham was on the sidelines on Sunday to watch to watch the new rules play out as his Cavan side got the better of Down in their opening Bank Of Ireland Dr McKenna Cup clash.

Forthright views were the order of the day from the man who also recently guided Mullinalaghta to famous Leinster club success.

"Players have enough to be thinking about without the extra burden of these new rules," Graham revealed to RTÉ Sport.

"It was frustrating for Down and ourselves. We were putting good moves together and that handpass option was gone, that pass that might have got you in for the goal had to become a kick pass.

"Football was starting to evolve and teams were getting more attack minded"

"When teams set up defensively, it's very hard to break them down when you are limited to three hand passes."

Crucially, Graham believes that the handpass restriction will reduce goalscoring opportunities.

"It's a problem and you will see less goals," he added.

"There were times today we broke through but were blown up for that extra pass. Players are doing something their instinct is telling them to do since there were four or five.

"The game was moving in the right direction in the last couple of years. Football was starting to evolve and teams were getting more attack minded.

"Quite simply, these rule changes are just too much all at once."
