St Martin's 0-13 2-11 Naomh Eanna

Naomh Éanna followed in the footsteps of first-time Wexford SFC winners Shelmaliers when the Gorey men swooped to their debut county SHC title as Conor McDonald fired 2-1 in Sunday's surprise final victory over defending champions St. Martin's at Innovate Wexford Park.

It was Gorey's first-ever appearance in the decider, and they certainly benefited from an eleventh-hour reprieve for inter-county attacker Cathal Dunbar, who was cleared to play by the DRA in Croke Park late on Saturday night, as clarification is sought regarding his sending-off in the county semi-final.

Dunbar really made his presence felt, as while St. Martin's sped 0-3 to 0-0 clear through Jack O'Connor (2) and Harry O'Connor, Gorey snapped back with an equalising seventh-minute goal and simply grew in confidence from there.

A Dunbar delivery from the left wing was fetched inside and netted by Conor McDonald, before points from Pádraig Doyle and Dunbar had the underdogs up 1-2 to 0-3 on nine minutes.

St. Martin's regained parity after 20 minutes as Ciarán Lyng (2 frees) and Jake Firman bridged the gap (0-6 to 1-3).

But Naomh Éanna remained purposeful as they continued to serve notice of their intent when bursting 1-7 to 0-7 clear at half-time through Pádraig Doyle, Cathal Dunbar (2) and Darragh Hughes (free) to the immense delight of their connections amongst the 6,980 attendance.

Gorey had a massive let off on the re-start though when Barry O'Connor forced a save.

St. Martin's grafted strongly but encountered stubborn resistance from Gorey, who established a firm foothold when Conor McDonald grabbed his second personal goal on 55 minutes to blow open a 2-10 to 0-11 lead.

The challengers were unrelenting, but a focused Gorey thwarted St. Martin's efforts before Naomh Éanna's ecstatic supporters engulfed the field after seven agonising minutes of added-time to embrace their history-makers.
