AFL side Carlton have confirmed that Ciaran Byrne and Cillian McDaid have left the club to return to Ireland.
Louthman Byrne, still only 23, spent five years in Australia but was hampered by injuries.
He played for St Mochta's in their Louth intermediate FC final defeat of St Fechin's on Sunday but suffered more bad fortune, injuring his ankle badly.
"What an experience it was," Byrne said when confirming his exit on Instagram.
"I really enjoyed my time albeit riddled with injuries. I got to play an amazing game with an amazing football club and I’ll be forever grateful for that. I’ve made some lifelong friends along the way and Carlton will always be family to me.
"For now my heart is in Ireland and I couldn’t spend any more time away from family, friends and the GAA. Unfortunately my GAA career will be put on hold with a small ankle hiccup but my beloved club St Mochta's are champions."
Galway man McDaid joined Carlton a year ago and did not make a senior appearance.
