Malachy O'Rourke will remain in charge of the Monaghan footballers until 2020 after agreeing to a one-year extension on his previous deal, Monaghan GAA has announced.

O'Rourke was ratified to stay on as manager at a County Committee Meeting on Monday following a season in which he guided the Farney county to a first All-Ireland semi-final since 1988.

Monaghan suffered a shock exit in the Ulster championship earlier this year on the back of a defeat to Fermanagh but recovered in the Super 8s competition on their way to booking a spot in the All-Ireland semi-finals.

They bowed out to their provincial rivals Tyrone in that last-four tie with a late Niall Sludden goal proving to be the difference between the two sides.

O'Rourke has delivered Ulster titles for Monaghan in 2013 and 2015 since he was first appointed to the position in September 2012.
