It seems there’s never a day without drama in Mayo football lately and the row engulfing their women’s footballers continues to rumble on.
The county’s LGFA board has voted to appeal Carnacon’s reinstatement in local senior competitions.
The club was thrown out of league and championship after their decision to withdraw their player from the Mayo panel, citing ‘player welfare issues’ back in July.
The Connacht Appeals Committee reinstated All-Ireland champions Carnacon, but Mayo voted on Tuesday night by 30 delegates to three to appeal that decision.
This follows on from a statement apparently from the players that remained behind saying that there were no welfare issues and that there was a ‘failed coup’ within the panel at the time of the walk-out.
Mayo’s men’s footballers are currently without a manager, Stephen Rochford having left the post last week due to what he saw as a lack of support from the top.
The women’s walk-out, which included Cora Staunton, happened just days before their All-Ireland championship game with Cavan.
Manager Peter Leahy’s under-strength side managed to win that game, emerge from their group and make it to the All-Ireland quarter-finals.
Once there, however, they were hammered by Galway and their season ended. The row spilled onto the club scene with Carnacon’s ejection and now reinstatement.
Given the county board’s decision to appeal that reinstatement it is likely that this row will rumble on.
