'Galway's ambition must be a lot higher'

So Galway are through to an All-Ireland football semi-final and deservedly so it must be said.

The three-point win over Kildare on Sunday confirmed their spot in the last four. Their defeat to Dublin in the Divsion 1 final has been their only reverses so far in this calendar year.

Joe Brolly is an admirer of what the Tribsemen are doing, but feels they can impose themselves more on games when it comes to putting sides away. Speaking on The Sunday Game, he said: "They are still content for long stretches of the game to slow the pace of the game down and to try and control the game.

"That is okay against the lesser teams but Galway's ambition has go to be a lot higher than that. They have excellent footballers. They have got to go harder in games.

To illustrate his point, he singled out Galway attacker Shane Walsh, who he believes is playing "far too deep".

He continued: "A player of that ability should be orchestrating things further up the field.

"They do not need that number of defenders back. Shane Walsh is picking up the ball far too deep. The guy is a wizard - push him up further. They have more than enough defenders back there.

"Galway need to tighten up their roles. After that they are in business, they have a lot of skills as a football team.

Looking ahead to Galway's date with Monaghan in the final round of the Super 8s, Brolly added: "There's no way that Galway are going to ease up for Monaghan.

"They are going to go for Monaghan - the last thing they want is to play Dublin in the semi-final. Galway are thinking that they can get to an All-Ireland final."
