Ryan O'Dwyer has hung up his hurl with Dublin, declaring: "Even though we've had some bad times, the good times overshadow all of them."

O'Dwyer - a native of Cashel, Co Tipperary - declared for the Dubs ahead of the 2011 season having represented the Premier up to senior level.

Anthony Daly coaxed him into the Dubs set-up and he played a key role in a hugely successful era for the capital's hurlers, winning a Walsh Cup, an Allianz Hurling Division 1 title and, most memorably, the Leinster SHC in 2013.

O'Dwyer, 31, suffered a serious assault in Birmingham four years ago that left him with a brain injury but he returned to represent the county.

"I said it to the lads I’d soldiered with for the last number of years, I said ‘thanks very much’," he told The Herald

"They made me feel so welcome coming in because I was taking a big chance. I said to the younger lads, the years do pass quick."
