Dublin's seemingly inevitable march towards eight Leinster SFC titles in a row gathered pace at Croke Park where Longford became the latest team to be comfortably dispatched.

Fresh from a 23-point quarter-final win over Wicklow, the three-in-a-row All-Ireland winners had 19 to spare this time and were virtually assured of progression to the June 24 decider by the 24th minute.

That's when Paul Mannion slammed in Dublin's second goal, following the lead of Dean Rock who'd netted minutes earlier.

Longford also lost full-forward James McGivney to a straight red card between those two goals and suddenly found themselves trailing 2-9 to 0-4 with a man down.

The Division 3 outfit, beaten by 27 points here in 2015, were never likely to reel Jim Gavin's side in after that though battled gamely and will go into tomorrow morning's Round 2 qualifier draw hopeful of extending their summer.

As for Dublin, it was simply business as usual as they maintained their 100 per cent record in the provincial championship under Jim Gavin with their 17th consecutive win.

The most significant aspect of the day, aside from progressing to face Laois in a repeat of the 2007 final, was the returns of Cian O'Sullivan and Jack McCaffrey from injury.

McCaffrey hadn't featured since suffering cruciate knee ligament damage early in last September's All-Ireland final win over Mayo.

O'Sullivan did play in the Allianz league but underwent shoulder surgery and missed the win over Wicklow.

Paul Flynn also stepped up his return to full fitness with a substitute appearance as Gavin ran in his full allocation of subs by the 58th minute.

He also got to look at Evan Comerford in goals after Stephen Cluxton was replaced following the heavy challenge that got McGivney his red card.

Robbie Smyth was Longford's liveliest attacker and scored four first-half points but Dublin simply created their scores easier and hit the interval with a 2-13 to 0-07 advantage.

They went goal hunting after the break and Mannion, Rock and Michael Darragh Macauley all went close to rattling the net in the third quarter.

Longford refused to park the bus and defend in numbers and picked off some eye-catching scores as a result. Dessie Reynolds, Sean McCormack and Rian Brady were all on the mark but Dublin weren't ever concerned and picked off enough points to maintain a healthy gap.

Colm Basquel came on and scored two neat points and went close with yet another goal opportunity late on.

There were scores for key duo Ciaran Kilkenny and Brian Fenton too as Dublin finished strong, hitting the game's last nine points.

By that stage Longford were without former Aussie Rulers player Michael Quinn who was black carded in the 55th minute for a trip on Kilkenny.

Niall Scully became the 11th different Dublin player to score a point when he split the posts in the 69th minute.
