Motion for Galway to move to Munster championship tabled

Galway's participation in the Leinster championship is in doubt
Galway's participation in the Leinster championship is in doubt

Galway club Liam Mellows have tabled a motion for the Galway County convention, seeking to move the Galway senior hurling team to the Munster championship.

The motion for the convention on December 12 comes amid increasing unrest in the county over their involvement in the Leinster hurling championship.

Galway joined the Leinster championship in 2009 after dominating in Connacht, however there has been growing unrest over their participation in Leinster, particularly over where they play their games.

The Tribesmen have consistently been forced to play their games in Leinster and in October had a request to be granted home fixtures refused.

All Galway teams (minor, under-21 and senior) are denied games in Galway and a breaking point appears to be close.

Under the motion from Liam Mellows, the Galway board would make an application to leave the Leinster championship and join the Munster competitions from 2018.
