Kevin Ryan was ratified as the new Offaly senior hurling manager following a lengthy debate at last night’s county board meeting.

During the meeting there were strong calls for Danny Owens to get the position instead, with club delegates of the Kilcormac/Killoughey man arguing his case.

However, Waterford man Ryan is now confirmed to take over from Eamonn Kelly.

Ryan, who has also managed Carlow, Antrim and Tyrone, will have Paul Flynn and Gary Longwell among his backroom staff.

As a player he won five senior county championships with Mount Sion and captained The Deise at both Under 21 and senior level.

Also at last night’s meeting, Pat Flanagan was re-appointed as Offaly’s senior football manager.
