Loughmore-Castleiney 1-09 Moyle Rovers 1-06

A third county title in four years went the way of Loughmore-Castleiney after they edged out Moyle Rovers in a tense, low-scoring second half.

The first period saw Loughmore-Castleiney start and finish the stronger team, hitting 0-3 without reply in the opening minutes before Moyle Rovers got off the mark in the 12th minute with a Stephen Quirke ’45’.

As the half wore on Moyle Rovers came more into it, and, although they were guilty of seven wides during this period, they led briefly just before the break after Dara Ryan brilliantly fired a low shot to the net.

That made it 1-3 to 0-4 in their favour but, seconds later, Cian Hennessy restored Loughmore-Castleiney’s advantage with a goal at the other end, despite the best efforts of Rovers’ goalkeeper Ian Browne.

Points by Cian Hennessy and John McGrath left them 1-06 to 1-03 up at the interval.

Scores were at a premium in the second half with Moyle Rovers failing to score at all in the third quarter, while Loughmore-Castleiney gradually pulled further ahead, Liam Treacy and Liam McGrath sending over fine efforts, the latter twice.

Hurling star Noel McGrath received a black card in the closing minutes, but that couldn’t prevent his side hanging on.
