Cora Staunton: Dublin have quality but Cork play to end

Mayo star Cora Staunton believes Dublin have the firepower to end Cork's grip on the All-Ireland Ladies' Senior Football Championship but that it would be foolish to back against the champions securing their sixth crown in a row.

Cork and Dublin meet in the final on Sunday for the third consecutive year, with Cork having claimed 10 of the last 11 titles.

The Dubs held off a second-half comeback from Staunton's Mayo to book their place in the decider.

"Dublin definitely have enough quality within their panel to beat this Cork side," Staunton told 2fm's Game On.

"But it's going to be very tough for them. There will be a lot of key battles on the day and I think midfield is going to be a huge one.

"Dublin have an exceptional forward line, probably the best in ladies' football at the moment.

"If they can get a performance for 60 minutes rather than the performance for 30 minutes against us, they'll push this Cork team all the way."

Dublin (in 2010) are the only team to lift the title since Cork began their domination of the game in 2005 and the nine-time All Star warns that the Rebelettes are as strong as ever.

"They maybe stuttered at the start of the league, which can happen to All-Ireland champions, but they haven't changed very much," she said.

"Valerie Mulcahy (retired) and Geraldine O'Flynn (injured) have been two major losses but I don't think they've really felt it yet.

"It could be a good different story on Sunday because those two have been their two top performers in All-Ireland finals over the last number of years.

"They have huge quality right throughout the team, from their goalkeeper Martina O'Brien to Bríd Stack, who's been there for all the All-Ireland wins, Deirdre O'Reilly, Bríege Corkery and Rena Buckley in midfield and the experience of Ciara O'Sullivan in the forward line.

"People thought when (manager) Eamon Ryan stepped away and a big name like Val was gone that this might be a Cork team in transition but they're as good as they were a couple of years ago.

"They're going to be very hard to beat and it would be very hard to back against them."

Revenge could be a motivating factor for a Dublin side who will be looking to make it third time lucky against a Cork side who denied them in 2015 and 2014, the latter despite trailing by 10 points with 16 minutes to play.

"This Cork team are so driven," said Staunton. "Each year they take as a different year. Each year they come back hungrier than the last.

"They're a phenomenal team and the girls who have been there the longest are determined to win as much as they can.

"It was two points last year and a point the year before. Even When Dublin were 10 points up in 2014, they had a never-say-die attitude. They'll play right till the end.

"They know how to win and that's an area that Dublin will have been working on, the mental aspect."
