Nigel Dineen will challenge Kevin McStay for the Roscommon job after the Under-21 manager was nominated alongside the 2016 manager.

Following the resignation of fellow joint-manager Fergal O'Donnell, it was decided that McStay would have to reapply for the role of Roscommon senior football team manager.

Both O’Donnell and McStay had been working together in the role but county board decided to hold an open competition for the position.

And Dineen’s nomination was confirmed on Wednesday as the Under-21 manager, who helped Roscommon win the 2001 Connacht title, looks to step up to take on the senior role.

Speaking on Shannonside FM earlier this month about his application, Dineen said: "I’m a very passionate Roscommon ex-footballer and manager and I have got serious support since I put my name forward from ex-county footballers, from current players and from the clubs and it is very important that who ever is the manager that they get the full support backing in the county and that they come behind the new manager."
