Brian Cody: Nothing between Kilkenny and Tipperary

Recent history may be on Kilkenny’s side but Brian Cody is adamant there’s “not a single thing” between his Cats and All-Ireland challengers Tipperary.

The Leinster champions are going for their third Liam MacCarthy title in a row tomorrow (3.30pm, live on RTÉ One), while it has been six seasons since Tipp got the better of Cody’s team, the All-Ireland final in 2010.

"Look, it’s straight-forward, it’s simple really," Cody told RTÉ Sport, “Ourselves and Tipperary, there’s not a single thing between us.

“They could beat us, we could beat them, we know that, they know that.

"It’s all about that day in Croke Park, All-Ireland final day. Whichever team just imposes themselves, I suppose, gets it right on the day, will win the game, or else, like has happened many times before now we’ll go again another day.

“Or it’ll be a comprehensive victory for one, I don’t know, but regardless, if we played the next four Sundays in a row either team could win any day.”

It took Kilkenny two bites of the cherry to overcome Tipp in the decider two years ago and Cody says he recognises that the Premier County are always in the mix.

He added: “They’re a top team. Every year you look at potential winners of an All-Ireland final, if you want to.

“I mean Tipperary are there every year, we are there every year. And I suppose there are four or five or six teams there as well on different years, but Tipperary are a constant – they are always there. It’s a quality team.

“This year they cruised through Munster, if you like.”
