After four-and-a-half years in charge of the Cavan senior footballers, Terry Hyland has announced that he is stepping down from the role.

Hyland's decision comes just over two weeks since the Breffni County exited this year's championship at the hands of Derry in Round 3A of the qualifiers. This spring saw Cavan gain promotion to the top flight of the Allianz League.

Before becoming senior manager, Hyland led Cavan to successive provincial U-21 titles.

It's generally accepted that Hyland's tenure was a successful one and that the county are well placed to push on in the next couple of years.

Reflecting on his time at the helm, Hyland told Drivetime on RTÉ Radio 1: "Cavan has come on a lot in the last four-and-a-half years. We went from just been a kick of the ball way from been in Division 4 to now been in Division 1.

"The graph has been rising for the players."

The former manager also complimented the county board for their assistance during his time in charge.

"Part of the strategy with the county board when we sat down with them at start was to make sure that we brought groups of players through at a time and blended them in with the existing panels," he outlined.

"That has proved successful during my term and it's important that Cavan keep doing that. I think other counties have now adopted the same scenario."

The Lacken native also spoke about the demands of running a business and managing an inter-county football team.

"I run a business and have eight or nine lads working for me. I have a responsibility to them. There has been a pick up in the economy, something as builders providers we wouldn't have seen in the last six or seven years.

"We've got busy. It's a case then of how one spreads their time.

"During the spring, I would find myself working an 80 to 85-hour week, taking the football into account as well. It was no longer doable."

Hyland did admit that he is somewhat saddened to be leaving his role.

"The decision is a tough one as my heart and my love has always been for Cavan football," he added.

"I'm 57 years of age now and I started playing football when I was 11 and haven't missed a year of involvement since.

"I'm sad to be leaving the lads. I enjoy working with young people and it's been good for me during the down times at work to see how they've succeeded and moved on."
